PRAKRITI-a mountain environment group

The Prakriti Group

Prakriti is a group of environment and development professionals, working in the Himalayan Mountains of India, established in 1997 towards increasing environmental concerns in the mountains. It works upon environmental protection and conservation related issues through a comprehensive approach of mountain development.

The group observes that, the mountains ecosystems are facing problems due to negative environmental externalities, leading to shrinking forest, depleting water resources, eroding bio-diversity, land degradation, loss of traditional practices and frequent disasters.

Approach

The Prakriti team believes that, cohesive environmental planning and step-by-step programs can prompt human being to harmonize with natural environmental principals, and helping in natural resource balance for better quality of life. It has a long-term commitment to local and global community by maximizing its impact through strong advocacy and grass root level actions.

The larger interventions of Prakriti are in water, forest, agriculture and land resources related programs. It mostly works among community groups on governance and policy planning issues.

Mountains

Mountains cover about 25 per cent of the world’s

land surface and up to 80 per cent of the planet’s fresh surface water comes from mountains. The Hindu Kush Himalaya has 10 big river systems and about 200 million people that perhaps impact more than 1.3 billion people in the surrounding lowlands.
